Beef O Brady's Bowl: 10 Key Moments in Louisville's 31-28 Win Over Southern Miss

    The Louisville Cardinals defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 31-28 in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl. Charlie Strong finished his first season as the Cardinals' head coach with a 7-6 record and a bowl victory.

    The win also kept the Big East Conference undefeated in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl, played in St. Petersburg, FL.

    Let's look at 10 key plays that shaped the outcome and story of the 2010 Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl.

Desmond Johnson's 62-Yard Rushing Touchdown

    Southern Miss' second drive of the game only lasted one play and 10 seconds. Desmond Johnson took the handoff and ran 62 yards for a touchdown, giving the Golden Eagles an early 14-0 lead.

    At that point it seemed as if the Golden Eagles would run over Louisville all night.

Louisville Gets on the Board

    On a 3rd-and-goal in the second quarter, Justin Burke completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Graham. This made the score 14-7 and provided a glimpse of hope for Cardinals fans.

Austin Davis Touchdown Reception

    Quarterback Austin Davis, one touchdown pass shy of the school career record, made an outstanding one-handed touchdown reception.

    Southern Miss caught Louisville off guard with the reverse pass from Quentin Pierce. The Golden Eagles took a 21-7 lead in the second quarter.

    Again, it appeared that Southern Miss was just going to have its way with Louisville and become the first Conference USA team to win the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl.

Louisville Fumble Recovery

    Louisville only trailed 21-14 following a nine-play, 80-yard scoring drive.

    The following Southern Miss drive ended when Austin Davis completed a pass to Johdrick Morris for eight yards. Louisville's Johnny Patrick forced a fumble, recovered by the Cardinals' Antwone Canady. Louisville took over on the Southern Miss 27-yard line.

Louisville Ties the Game Going into Halftime

    Louisville was given the opportunity they were hoping for. The Cardinals converted the turnover to tie the game at 21 four plays later on a six-yard Bilal Powell run.

    The Cardinals were very fortunate to go into the half tied with Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles owned the Cardinals for most of the first half. The second half would prove to be a different ball game.

Blocked Field Goal

    Southern Miss had a chance to take the lead back in the third quarter with a 29-yard field goal. However, Johnny Patrick timed the snap perfectly and blocked the kick.

    The three points taken away would prove to be crucial in the outcome of the game.

Austin Davis' Record-Setting Touchdown Pass

    After a scoreless third quarter, Austin Davis connected with Zeke Walters for an eight-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter. The pass gave Southern Miss a 28-21 lead.

    The pass also gave Davis the career record for touchdown passes at Southern Miss. His 53 touchdown passes put him ahead of Lee Roberts and Brett Favre in the school record books.

Jeremy Wright Kickoff Return for a Touchdown

    While Austin Davis and the Southern Miss sideline were celebrating his accomplishment, the game was still being played.

    Jeremy Wright took the kickoff back 95 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 28. The return was the longest return in Beef 'O' Brady's bowl history, as well as the first kickoff returned for a touchdown in the bowl.

Louisville Field Goal

9 of 10

    Louisville would take its first lead of the game on a 36-yard Chris Philpott field goal, making the score 31-28. After the game coach Charlie Strong said in that 4th-and-1 situation there was no doubt whether to kick the ball or go for it.

Bilal Powell 28-Yard Run

10 of 10

    Bilal Powell started Louisville's final drive by breaking for a 28-yard run.

    Louisville's entire last drive was pivotal to the outcome of the game. They started with 4:41 on the clock, and by the time Southern Miss would get the ball back after a punt, there would only be seven seconds left and no timeouts. Even the punt itself was outstanding, pinning the Golden Eagles on their 2-yard line.
